I like the encore idea in principle, and when living in Adelaide I guess I genuinely thought we were working hard for one - was disappointed to learn that it's almost obligatory. NIN were great on that one though, you're right - a bit like Rollins in that regard: the show starts, the show goes hard, the show ends, and you leave feeling like you had a really good main course, rather than an acceptable main course and an unnecessary pudding.

I guess the currency of the S.O. is just that you've got to put in a bit of extra effort to produce it, and the only reason we haven't developed the idea further is that stage invasion is frowned upon. In 40 or 50 years I'm forecasting that the way such levels of enthusiasm will be delivered is by the punters standing, dropping their trousers, and masturbating furiously. Of course that'll cause the sound level of the applause to drop, so either mandatory howling will become the fashion, or punters will have the chance to rent one of those clacker things that you swing around your head to be operated by the spare hand.

Your final point about no encore is what I loved about the NIN gig I saw. With encores these days, you aren't getting anything extra, the band still plays it's normal gig length, it's just 5 minutes where the band goes of stage and waits for their egos to get pampered. With NIN instead of going off for 5 minutes, it's 5 more minutes of loud awesomeness. Much better value for money.

Now, thanks to you, I really need to understand why the hell a standing ovation is better than a seated one. It just gets in my way of seeing the curtain call.
